The Year 2025
The process of facilities planning will be a defining one if it brings your institution to a focus on the future. The shaping and reshaping of structures should set the stage for ongoing conversations about the purpose of the enterprise, conversations among members of your campus community, and with the larger group of individuals and institutions addressing national issues in regard to building and sustaining a strong undergraduate SME&T sector.
Focusing on the future in the context of facilities planning brings us to a consideration of how:
- boundaries are becoming blurred between disciplines and departments
- technologies are changing learning and teaching
- building natural science communities for all students suggests new connections between classroom and lab, offices and study spaces
- anticipating further changes requires flexibility
Finally, a focus on the future brings us to a realization that scientific and technological understanding is becoming essential as a foundation for a full life in the 21st century. As this understanding shapes our spaces, sciences and mathematics will assume their rightful place in the liberal arts curriculum.
