No matter what the impetus for improving the environment for learning
(deteriorating facilities, concerns about curriculum resulting from emerging
technologies, new pedagogies, advances in science or changing student
demographics), it takes the energy and informed action of a committed
faculty member(s) to start the process and to keep moving ahead.
Reforms must be developed, implemented and evaluated by faculty--those who
understand the scientific way of knowing, the nature of problem-solving,
observation and investigation, collaboration and community that is at the
heart of doing science.
