Vision Statement

PortPKAL is a collaborating partner with Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) working on the regional level to enhance the capabilities of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty to strengthen undergraduate student learning in these fields.

It responds to the growing national need to: increase the numbers and quality of STEM majors at the undergraduate level who are well-equipped to contribute to the 21st century Science & Technology workforce; and prepare 21st century students for their responsibilities as citizens in a 21st century society significantly influenced by science and technology.

The following goal and strategies serve this vision.


To build “scaffolding” that empowers STEM faculty to adapt and employ contemporary pedagogies of engagement having documented success in strengthening student learning in STEM fields.


  • Start from where you are.
  • Deepen understanding of the power and potential of pedagogies of engagement, create, and scale-up local expertise.
  • Link pedagogical change to enhancing institutional distinction.
  • Use external resources creatively and persistently, including PKAL and other collaborating partners; be part of the larger national effort.
