What the community has been doing...
The last few months have been a productive time in the work of transforming undergraduate programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

  1. One significant event was the inaugural assembly of the National Science Digital Library Community. To keep abreast of developments in the NSDL, go here.

  2. Two publications outlining new directions for undergraduate STEM have been introduced:

  • Evaluating and Improving Undergraduate Teaching from the National Research Council presents the rationale for greater attention to determining the effectiveness of teaching and learning:

"...Our study points out ways in which the fair evaluation of teaching and learning in STEM disciplines can be institutionalized as the basis for allocating rewards and promotions, at a level of effort consistent with a department's or college's (university's) education mission."

This is a valuable document both for administrators responsible for faculty development and evaluation, and for individual faculty charting a career in an undergraduate learning environment. The report can be reviewed here.

  • Complex Environmental Systems: Synthesis for Earth, Life, and Society in the 21st Century was presented to the community last week by NSF's Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education. Comments from Stephanie Pfirman, Past Chair of the Advisory Committee, made in presenting the report to NSF, can be found here

The report can be reviewed from the NSF website here.

  1. These and other recent activities will be reviewed at the February 3, 2003 meeting of the PKAL-sponsored Washington-based disciplinary societies and educational associations (DSEA).

And...

The next posting of Keck/PKAL reports is now available, on the issue of "how to support faculty scholarly activity more directly." and can be found here.
