I completed an undergraduate degree at Princeton University in Geological Engineering, after which I spent a year as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Iceland. The research project I began there became the foundation of my doctoral program in Geochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1988 I accepted a short-term faculty position at the University of Virginia that evolved into a shared appointment between the University and the Virginia Museum of Natural History. In 1998 I relocated to Penn State, where I am an Associate Professor and currently serve as Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Programs. Throughout my career I have developed interdisciplinary programs in research, teaching and public education. I serve as a mentor for pre-college, college and post-baccalaureate students from underrepresented groups, and am assuming a leadership role in our partnership efforts with African Universities and domestic HBCUs.
