Common sense pedagogy indicates students need to know their level of current knowledge in order to construct new knowledge. Current research shows how preconceptions often block the learning process and need to be identified whether it relates to the discipline or aspects of classroom assessment which influences student motivation to learn. This workshop will illustrate multiple strategies to use for introductory assessment and identifying preconceptions. Students also need to know expected learning outcomes of assignments. Assignments need to reflect intentions for learning and provide feedback to student and grades. This aspect will be demonstrated in the design and use of performance criteria. Join us to promote learning that encourages self-improvement and development of competence plus a view of student achievement based on how well the particular learning tasks were accomplished.
