Breakout session C
The role of science in general education: Rhetoric vs. reality

Saturday, November 8, 2003
3:30 - 4:45 pm

Presenter:
Mauri A. Ditzler, Dean of College- Wabash College

This session will consider the extent to which general education science courses are consistent with stated faculty goals. In particular we will focus on the relationship between broad-based goals often stated for the courses and the more focused intent of specific assignments. We will consider whether typical (or even innovative) day-to-day assignments, discussions, and exams support overarching goal like having students 'think as a scientist," "engage in data-based decision making," or "confront ambiguity." Participants will be asked to describe several typical course modules and consider whether they have lasting educational value beyond content introduction.
