Kym Libman, Project Green Reach Coordinator - Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Barbara Kushner-Kurland, Coordinator of Teacher Education- Brooklyn Botanic Garden

This workshop session will provide an overview of the Project Green Reach (PGR) undergraduate internship program, highlighting the training interns receive to prepare them to best serve the needs of their students while engaging them in the experience of being scientists as they complete their research projects. Project Green Reach (PGR) is a science-based outreach program of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden that serves economically disadvantaged schools throughout the borough of Brooklyn. PGR partners with 40 elementary schools to promote inquiry-based science education within the disciplines of botany and environmental science. Specific projects, such as " The Junior Botanist" target students in grades 4,5, and 6 and the "Plant Investigator" program allow these students to return to the garden and mentor younger participants as gardeners work in teams to complete and present a scientific research project of their own design. To facilitate our summer programming, PGR hires three undergraduate interns who work for 10 weeks training for, planning, facilitating, and documenting these programs. We are currently restructuring this internship program and have proposed an extended and focused practicum in environmental education for these undergraduate students. We will share examples of work created by interns and students and discuss the future of this internship program. Kym Libman is a graduate of the Science, Technology, and Society and Education Studies programs at Eugene Lang College (ELC), and throughout the presentation will highlight how her education at ELC informs the work she does in PGR. Barbara Kushner-Kurland is a collaborating instructor in the PGR internship program.
