In response to societal, student and faculty demand, nearly every college and university in the US offers some sort of environmental emphasis. The majority of these are within disciplinary departments, especially in biology and other natural sciences. According to surveys conducted by Al Romero, now of Arkansas State University, almost half of nearly 700 environmental programs or departments were named environmental studies or environmental sciences. About 1/3 of the programs combined natural sciences and social sciences, but less than 5% of all programs incorporated humanities. Beyond the most general information, little aggregated data exists regarding academic environmental programs.
