Workshop Abstract

Faculty working as a department team can create stronger programs than individual faculty working alone. Synergies between courses can be levereged to reach departmental learning goals and productivity and capitalize on opportunities within the larger campus environment more creatively. This workshop will focus on developing a coherent curriculum for students studying the earth and planetary sciences from giving attention to course-based and skill-based perspectives, implementing research-rich experiences throughout the program, and promoting student exploration of goals through effective advising. Workshop participants will articulate specific goals for their department and explore issues associated with building strong departments that are well-connected to other programs across campus. Discussion will focus on strategies for program implementation and assessment of impact on student learning of new pedagogical approaches.

The workshop will focus on programs for undergraduate Earth and planetary science majors. Broad themes that will be addressed include:

  • Articulation of objectives in the development of coherent curricula and programs
  • Identification of ‘best practices' for each element of the curriculum and other parts of a departmental program that are appropriate in various institutions
  • Assessment of student learning outcomes and program effectiveness

Workshop sessions include:
