Session: Departmental Roles in Interdisciplinary Programs
Presenter(s):
Eric B. Grosfils, Pomona College
The evolving requirements of society clearly suggest the need for stronger interdisciplinary connections between traditional fields of science. Geoscience, by its very nature, is well suited to such endeavors, and there is thus a correspondingly strong need for geoscientists to perform a thoughtful assessment of their place within a modern, increasingly interdisciplinary academic curriculum. This session will explore the extent to which geoscience departments can or should modify their traditional roles. Discussion will center around potential benefits and obstacles and ways to promote the development of successful interdisciplinary curricula that meet the needs of students and faculty alike.
