Undergraduate STEM: The Global Perspective
PKAL 2002 Summer Institute - Cluster I
May 29 - June 1, 2002
Workshop Abstract
Faced with increasing demand for scientists in emerging science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SMET) specialties such as biotechnology and bioinformatics on a worldwide scale, and decreasing enrollments in engineering in the U.S., companies and academic institutions are looking beyond the traditional pool of talent in this country and targeting foreign nationals to fulfill this need. In addition, scientific and technological education and commerce are increasingly becoming global and other countries have increased their investments in these areas.
Educators must therefore modify the traditional approach for preparing the next generation of the American workforce. One area of modification is the globalization of the undergraduate experience. Positive international experiences can motivate undergraduates to pursue careers in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. This workshop will provide a wealth of information to faculty interested in developing a new international program with a strong educational component. Topics that would be discussed include:
- Factors to consider before designing an international undergraduate program
- Types of international programs for undergraduates based on activities and duration
- Curricular and research activities at foreign sites
- Challenges and opportunities associated with international undergraduate programs
- Evaluating international summer research program for undergraduates
Sessions for this workshop include:
- Global STEM Education: James Madison University
- Technology in the Global Context
- Preparing Students for a Global Workplace
- Gretchen Kalonji
- Dickinson College
- The BRAVO! Program at the University of Arizona
