General Education in STEM: For All Students
PKAL 2002 Summer Institute - Cluster I
May 29 - June 1, 2002
Workshop Abstract
One of the most notable reorientations in undergraduate SME&T programs over the past decade is a focus on educating all students to become science literate. This new direction emerges because of a growing awareness that literacy in mathematics and the various fields of science helps people live interesting and productive lives. In a culture increasingly pervaded by science, mathematics, and technology, it is vital that our students gain an understanding of how science and technology impact their lives. This workshop will address ways in which general education courses can impart the knowledge and skills necessary for our students to lead informed and productive lives in the 21st century and beyond.
Sessions for this workshop include:
- An Integrative Approach to General Education Science Curriculum
- Science and Civic Engagement for General Science Education
- Mathematics for General Education: What Is a Genuine Application of Mathematics?
- The Shapes of Nature
- General Education at William Jewell College
- Interdisciplinary Quantitative Reasoning
