Workshop Abstract

Biochemistry: Focusing on Learning in the 21st Century will feature a variety of sessions all focusing on student learning and the ways that individual faculty and programs can work together to maximize student learning. Each session of this workshop will endeavor to answer the questions:

  • What do students need to learn?
  • What do they need to know?
  • How do they learn it?
  • What do faculty need to teach effectively using the emerging emphasis on both the research paradigm and integration of material and programs?

Five specific workshop sessions will be integrated into the overall themes of the Summer Institute to promote dialog within the discipline and to foster continuing conversations between the disciplines to promote an integrated approach to student learning in the molecular life sciences for both majors and general education students.

Session in this workshop include:

  • Preparation of Students to be Active Researchers throughout their Undergraduate Careers
  • Focus on Content of the Biochemistry Curriculum
  • Quantitative Thinking and Communication Skills Across the Curriculum
  • Integrated Introductory Courses and Integrated Programs in Biochemistry
  • Faculty and Program Development Necessary to Sustain a Successful Biochemistry Program

Case studies include:

  • Team-teaching Biochemistry courses for majors and non-majors
  • The COACH Program from the ACS Women's Committee
  • New Directions
  • Quantitative Thinking and Communication Skills Across the Curriculum: The Clemson Experience

Additional emphasis will be placed on ways to mentor students throughout their undergraduate careers to ensure their success in their chosen endeavors. Each participant will develop an agenda for action for the 2002-2003 academic year, in consultation with workshop leaders and other participants.
